Origins

I haven't heard of Sonya before in literature based on the Diablo franchise. Let's assume she is the Diablo III in-game playable female Barbarian. Considering her name and her redish hair, she is definitely a pop culture reference to The Red Sonja (1985).

The Barbarian is one of the classes of Sanctuary in the Diablo franchise. The Barbarian class was introduced for the first time as a playable class in Diablo II (2000).

The Barbarian

The Barbarian, a member of any of several tribes on the fringes of civilization, rebuffs the influence of those he sees as soft and weak. Ceaseless clan warfare and the constant struggle to survive in the hostile wilderness are evident in the Barbarian's sturdy and powerful frame. Though perhaps lacking the sophistication of his civilized contemporaries, the Barbarian has an acute awareness of his surroundings. Because of his shamanistic belief in the animal powers with whom he identifies, the Barbarian is sometimes associated with stories of lycanthropy. In fact, he believes that he can improve his superb battle tactics by calling upon the totemic animal spirits to infuse him with supernormal strengths and abilities.

History

Legend says that when the world was very young the tribes of the Northern Steppes were given a sacred charge. Somewhere deep within the great mountain, Arreat, lies a source of great power, crucial to the well being of all humanity. The tribes were tasked to act as guardians of this artifact. They have shaped their way of life in observance of this power and fulfilling their sacred duty.

Steeped in mystery and tradition, these people refer to themselves as the "Children of Bul-Kathos," the great and ancient king. To better protect their lands from outside forces, they adopted a nomadic lifestyle, frequently moving within the confines of the Steppes and maintaining few permanent settlements. Isolating themselves from the world outside their territories, they eschew the use of magics and complex machinery, as they believe these things can only weaken their resolve developed over so many years.

The Children of Bul-Kathos have developed a kinship with the land and have learned to harness the primal energies within nature to enhance their own substantial physical prowess. It is because of this, together with their freedom from the trappings of the outside world, that the Western Kingdoms have historically referred to these tribes as "Barbarians," an epithet that belies the rich cultural and spiritual history these people truly possess. Although some trade with these curious bands of nomads, they do so only along the outermost borders of their lands. All intrusions into the territory surrounding Mount Arreat are forbidden, and warriors from the northern tribes are quick to thwart any incursions. Every foreign attempt at conquest has been met with fierce and decisive resistance.

An account of one skirmish recounts how hordes of Barbarian tribesmen silently appeared where none had been but moments before. Their bodies painted in mysterious designs and their faces howling as they charged like the fierce mountain winds, the tribesmen descended on the invaders. Fully half of the trespassing army immediately dropped their weapons and fled, the remainder were set upon by the Northmen with fervor that none of the battle-hardened invaders had ever witnessed. No mercy was asked and none was given, but in the end, when the outlanders sounded a full retreat, no chase was given either… at least none that could be observed.

Since news of Diablo's re-emergence has spread, a small number of Barbarian warriors have begun roving the lands outside the Steppes, prepared for war and seeking information regarding the recent activities of the Prime Evils.

Traits and Abilities

Renowned for their awesome combat prowess as well as their arrogant demeanor, the Barbarians appear to be perpetually girt for battle. Through harsh conditioning, the Barbarians excel in physical combat and tremendous feats of strength. They derive their power chiefly through intense physical training, but they also tap primal energies from the living world around them. They can manifest these or add to their already considerable catalogue of superhuman feats of strength and power.

"Why do you bother me?"

"Choose your next words carefully."

"I swear, the next person who names me Barbie on Battle.net gets an axe to the forehead."

"Bul-Kathos, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one will remember why we fight, or why we die. All that matters is that five stood against five. I ask you, grant me one request. Improve my MMR! If you do not listen, then to hell with you!"

"Let's see, crush enemies, done. Drive them before me, of course. Hear the lamentations of their women... let's skip that one."

"You! Death by snu snu!"

"Blondes may have more fun, but redheads are more fun."

"Gingers do have souls, okay?"

"I keep killing, but no loot comes out. This game makes no sense."

"Ever have that nightmare where you're at work in your underwear? That's me, every day."

"If I ever find out who invented the chainmail bikini, I'm going to punch their jaw off their face."

"Once in my many travels, a pig of a man told me to make him a sandwich. So I sliced him nice and thin."

Backstory

The Power of the Horde incarnated by brutal rhythyms and blistering guitar riffs into the form of the most elite tauren chieftain to ever headbang across the surface of Azeroth. Don't bother putting on socks. He's just going to rock them off anyways.

Origins

The ETC name stands for Elite Tauren Chieftain. It was introduced at BlizzCon 2005 as a rock band of Blizzard employees. Later, as an NPC in the World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade expansion as the leader of a rock band named Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain.

In real life and in-game, the band is composed of Samuro (Samwise Didier), Sig Nicious (Chris Sigaty) the rhythm guitarist, Bergrisst (Dave Berggren) the lead guitarist, Mai'Kyl (Mike Morhaime) the bassist and Chief Thunder-Skins (Alan Dabiri) the drummer.

The band has had several incarnations since 2003 changing from level 10 (Warcraft III), level 60 (WoW vanilla), level 70 (Burning Crusade), level 80 (Wrath of the Lich King) and level 90 (Mists of Pandaria).

There are a few notable songs released by Blizzard Entertainment over the years by ETC. The first one titled "Power of the Horde" (2003), and a very iconic one titled "I am Murloc" (2007).

"Ready to rock!"

"Point me to the stage!"

"It takes a real stud to rock a pink goatee."

"Where I go is the cow level."

"Hell yes I'm a fan of Mootallica!" (referencing the band Metallica)

"My bread?(?) Baby I will smoke whatever you got."

"Baby I'm a five-star general of the Metal Moooolitia."

"Mess with the bull, you gon' get the horns (angry moo, crashing sound). I told ya!"

"One hundred percent pure bull, baby!"

"E.T.C. - Easy as one, two, three!"

"I wanna rock and roll all day, and party every night! We can say that, right? I mean I changed up the words and everything- (telephone ringing) Oh no! Don't pick that up. (Muffled Murloc voice on phone) Okay, tell 'em I'm not here."

"We need more cowbell! ... Aw, come on! That's all you got for me?! How old is that joke, man? We need more cowbell... What we need is better writers. Forget this, baby! (microphone feedback) I'll be in the tour bus. (walks away)."

"I like my metal like I like my coffee: black and heavy."

"Live your life by a simple creed. Mine is half a good time, all the time. Oh, and Creed sucks."

"Man I've seen a million faces, and I've rocked them all!"

"I have been known to get bullish around groupies."

Origins

Diablo debuted in the acclaimed RPG game of all times Diablo (1996) by Blizzard Entertainment. During the Darkening of Tristram, Diablo influenced the hearts of men, focusing on King Leoric the most and driving him insane. Archbishop Lazarus served Diablo in secrecy and attempted to use King Leoric's youngest son Albrecht as the vessel for Diablo. In the events of the video game, a brave warrior fought his way through the lower depths of the Cathedral of Tristram to face the Lord of Terror. The Warrior drove the soulstone housing Diablo's spirit into his forehead to contain his spirit. However, Diablo possessed him body and soul becoming his vessel. In Diablo III, it is revealed that the young Warrior was named Aidan -- eldest son of King Leoric. In the days following the Darkening of Tristram, Aidan was known as The Dark Wanderer. Always traveling east to free Diablo's brothers from their soulstone prisons: Baal and Mephisto. In the end, Diablo was defeated in the Burning Hells. Ever since his spirit remained trapped within the Black Soulstone. It is revealed in Diablo III, that Adria the Witch was in communion with the Lord of Terror as his servant all along. She marked his soul to be dragged into the Black Soulstone. His long-term plan was to one day rise as the Prime Evil with the spirits of the Great and Lesser evils and Leah the Nephalem empowering him. Several novels are based on the Diablo universe: Some of them are contained in a collection of four novels in the Diablo Archive (which contains: Legacy of Blood, The Black Road, The Kingdom of Shadow and Demonsbane).

Origins

Prince Arthas debuted in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and became the Lich King in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (both included in the Warcraft III Battle Chest). The Lich King was the main villain in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King where he met his demise before heroes of the Alliance and the Horde with the assistance of Tirion Fordring and his Argent Crusade.

Arthas made a cameo as a child in the pages of World of Warcraft: Tides of Darkness, when Sir Anduin Lothar and a young Prince Varian Wrynn arrived to the throne of Lordaeron to seek shelter for the refugees of Stormwind shortly after the old Horde decimated the Kingdom. This novel was reprinted in the World of Warcraft: Chronicles of War which collects 4 novels.

In addition, you can learn more about Arthas in the Warcraft III novelization titled World of Warcraft: Arthas: Rise of the Lich King by New York Times best selling author Christie Golden.

Arthas the Lich King made a cameo in the Tokyopop manga Warcraft: Legends Volume 4 (the final story of Trag Highmountain, the tauren death knight). Another flashback cameo as Arthas the Death Knight and as the Lich King in World of Warcraft: The Essential Sunwell Collection by New York Times best selling author Richard A. Knaak.

History

Through demonic punishment, the Lich King was born with a singular objective: controlling the massive throng of undead known as the Scourge.

Ner'zhul was an elder orc shaman who rose as high as warchief of the orc clans of Draenor... and fell low enough to become a slave of the Burning Legion. After the Second War drew to a close, Ner'zhul -- guided by visions of death -- frantically opened new portals to worlds that the orcish hordes might invade, but the magical stress of creating so many portals at once tore Draenor apart. Ner'zhul escaped the death of his homeworld by fleeing into the nearest rift, only to find the demon Kil'jaeden lying in wait for him. Kil'jaeden had long manipulated Ner'zhul's visions to guide the orcs down a dark path, and now the demon punished his puppet by destroying Ner'zhul's body and encasing his spirit in an icy cask that would come to be called the Frozen Throne. This act birthed the Lich King, a spectral presence made to command the Scourge, an army of undead that would serve as the Burning Legion's advance weapon against Azeroth.

Despite his orders, the Lich King plotted to break free of the Legion's influence. During the Third War, he summoned Arthas Menethil, the fallen prince of Lordaeron, to serve as his most loyal death knight. When the Lich King was threatened by the forces of Illidan the Betrayer, Arthas traveled to the Frozen Throne of Northrend and broke the ice surrounding his master, donning the Lich King's helm and merging with him. Years later, the Alliance and Horde would march to destroy the Lich King, but they discovered that the Scourge, now loosed upon Azeroth, would always need a leader. The brave highlord Bolvar Fordragon volunteered to become the new jailor of the damned, dedicating his existence to containing the ravages of the undead.

"Frostmourne yearns."

"You will all serve me."

"I rule."

"Hail to the King, baby!"

"I am one cold brother."

"Darkness, stop calling. It's alright, though. We are still friends through Real ID."

"I'm afraid my condition has left me cold to your pleas of mercy."

"No man can defeat me. Although, 10 to 25 might do the trick."

"If you think I'm powerful now, you should see my abilities in Heroic mode."

"I'm looking for a few dead men with the cursed meddle to be death knights."

"It's Lich King, not Lick King. The two are very very different jobs."

"All I want is to settle down with a Lich Queen of my own, and have some little Lichlings. Is that too much to ask?"

"Ever get the feeling you are hearing voices in your helmet?"

"You'd make an adequate ghoul. Mindless, and proficient at repetitive tasks."

"The thing no one tells you about sitting on a Frozen Throne is how much of your flesh ends up stuck to it."

Blizzplanet | Heroes of the Storm First Impressions

Heroes of the Storm is extremely fun and addictive. I-know-I-know … it is no surprise, it is a no-brainer, and it’s not rocket-science. It’s a Blizzard Entertainment video game.

I have never played a MOBA video game in my life. The Warcraft III DOTA doesn’t count, right? I think I played that about 10 times a decade ago. I thought I wouldn’t enjoy Heroes of the Storm as much as I have enjoyed other beta testings, but I find myself playing more than 5 hours straight.

What makes me queue again after finishing a game? Well, It’s possibly the fun factor, but it may also be that I want to try another Hero. Then another hero. This game is easy to play and difficult to master. I have won many battlegrounds and I still don’t know why my team hasn’t lost having a noob tagging along. Which means anyone can play this game.

You don’t need to be an Elitist jerk (not the guild, the real deal) to win a battleground match against other players for as long as other players and yourself are sticking to the objectives of the battleground.

I have met defeat, nevertheless. Usually playing a different role or when playing in the Cursed Hollow battleground — which is bonkers hard.

Even so, following the objectives of the battleground do not guarantee victory. It is difficult to comprehend how one can win without completely following the battleground objectives. There are specific elements that might turn the tide in a unexpected direction.

For example, I am still wondering how my team won after the enemy team kept taking most of the skulls in the Haunted Mines and attacked our base constantly with epic golems. Something unique happened here that drove us to victory at the edge of nigh defeat with zero communication and no organization.

This is the painful 34 minute match that I am still wondering how we won. I summoned a battlecruiser and it happened to go into the enemy altar’s trajectory to hammer the final nail on its coffin. How that altar was nigh destroyed is beyond me. Was it the creeps we defeated and joined our cause? Did they keep attacking the enemy base unattended and the enemy party didn’t defend their own base? That might be a unexpected factor. Every single time the enemy would summon a bigger golem than ours — as the scoreboard can confirm. The 34-minute match video can be found at the bottom of this page.

So far I find Jim Raynor and Abathur my favorites. Abathur is difficult, but fun. The hardest for me so far has been Illidan and Tyrael. Their talents can be a bit confusing. Just requires me to play them more often in Practice or Cooperative Mode to master — which is fine by me. As a noob into the MOBA scene, so far Blizzard has sold Heroes of the Storm to me as a fun and addictive game I want to play.

The hardest problem for me at the moment is to find time to play Warlords of Draenor, Hearthstone, Diablo III and Heroes of the Storm. Can someone please stretch a day to be longer than 24-hours? Please?!

You Say Tomatoe, I say Tomato

So there is the term used often to describe League of Legends and DOTA 2: MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). Blizzard Entertainment has decided to stray away from calling Heroes of the Storm a MOBA video game. Blizzard calls Heroes of the Storm a Team Hero Brawler. I am going to offer my humble opinion on that.

Both, League of Legends and DOTA 2 are Free-to-Play games. I have heard wonders for years about both. I can care less. Not even for free. They have a missing ingredient, that Blizzard Entertainment focuses on. I have an emotional investment on the Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo lore (in terms of in-game quests, novels, short stories, mangas), their characters, races and locations.

When I set foot upon the Nexus, I was welcomed by freaking Uther the Lightbringer, and I was Jim Raynor. I could listen to Robert Clotworthy’s voice through [MY] Jim Raynor character.

As I shot my way through mobs, Jim Raynor made fun comments and references to things I have heard in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. Uther even made a joke reference to Kael’thas’ “Death was just a setback.”

Whenever the Hero I play walks near a friendly Hero, the voice interacts with the random Hero standing next to me. When I am fighting an enemy Hero or kill that Hero, I get another voice over response to that.

It is fun. It is immersive. It is Awesome. It goes beyond a battle arena. I know these Heroes. I identify with them. DOTA 2 and League of Legends can be all what people on the internet say it to be, but I don’t know who those characters are, and I never cared to play them for Free.

If Blizzard asked me to pay $49.99 for Heroes of the Storm after playing Technical Alpha, I would gladly pay it. All they needed to convince me was the Developer Q&As and the gameplay videos at Twitch.tv/blizzheroes

That’s all it took long before Technical Alpha launched.

Heroes of the Storm – Gameplay Modes UI

After finishing the tutorial missions, you will find the Gameplay Modes option at the top-left corner on your screen … (Play).

There are three Gameplay Modes: Practice, Cooperative and Versus.

The Practice Mode is a single player (plus 3 AI allies) versus the AI. The Cooperative Mode queues the player to play with other players against the AI. The Versus Mode allows players to battle against other players.

The Cooperative Mode becomes unlocked after reaching level 2. Versus Mode is unlocked at level 3.

Note: I have never played a MOBA before, and make mistakes. Go easy on me. Simply enjoy the content. All you get to see in these videos are from the Technical Alpha and in no way represent what you will see in the final product. Graphic Settings’ Texture quality is set to Ultra on an EVGA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST at 1920×1080. However, recorded using Xsplit at 1280×720. Choose 720HD after launching the videos. In addition, I have played all Blizzard betas beyond 2001. It’s possible Ultra settings’ art might be a placeholder in Technical Alpha.

Don’t forget to follow Blizzplanet on Twitter, Facebook or YouTube for the newest Heroes of the Storm videos.

Gameplay Mode UI

Practice Mode

After the tutorial, the player begins his first Practice Mode. It is basically a single-player with 3 AI allies versus 4 AI enemies. This video shows the Blackheart’s Bay battleground.

Heroes of the Storm – Tutorial Mission

When launching Heroes of the Storm for the first time, a tutorial kicks off right away to teach the player how to move and how to attack.

To move you right-click on the ground. To attack press A and left-click the target or the ground. Feels a lot like playing Warcraft III.

The tutorial can be pretty hilarious with the voice overs of Jim Raynor, Uther and Diablo. Raynor isn’t very impressed with Diablo’s lines about tasting his fear and tasting terror. Uther also throws another reference: “Death is merely a setback.”

Progress UI

Heroes of the Storm – Store Prices List

The Heroes of the Storm store displays how much gold each hero can be purchased with, and that is a very clever way to display the pricing. By listing the heroes as purchasable with gold, the player doesn’t get slapped in the face with a real-money price tag as if it is an obligation.

Buying with real-money is optional. You decide to skip the time-consuming gold farming and pay cash. It’s a commodity. In the practical way, however, amassing large quantities of gold might take quite a while — like it does in Hearthstone, but more the challenging and rewarding the gameplay experience.
